In an article recently published in the Wall Street Journal, Kia announced that it will build a luxury, flagship sedan, and released sketches of that vehicle to prove it. My oh my, does this car look sharp or what?
Indiana Kia owners or prospective Kia owners can expect the car to be available locally at some point, but not initially. Kia stated that the new car will initially be available in Korea, and then scale globally from there.
Here is the article originally published in the WSJ:
Korean car maker Kia Motors Corp. revealed sketches of its coming large flagship sedan. The company said it will launch the rear-wheel-drive luxury car in the Korean market in the first half of this year.
Known for now as the KH, the new model is Kia’s first-ever sedan with rear drive and its front grille shape and other design features link it clearly with current mass-market models like the Optima and Rio. The KH reflects a desire at Kia to move into upscale markets as other car makers including Volkswagen and Toyota.
Kia said its designers paid special attention to the car’s side view, which shows a “simple side character line to give a feeling of spaciousness while emphasizing the new model’s bold and dynamic image.”
“Our all-new flagship sedan integrates all of our key capabilities such as design, performance, high-tech features and infotainment into one striking model,” said Soon-Nam Lee, director of Kia’s overseas marketing group.
Kia said it had not yet released its planned timing for launching the car in other countries, but said the KH “will definitely become the leading model of our line-up around the world, showcasing the best of the best of Kia.”
New services available through e-Services include automatic crash notification that senses air bag deployment and will place a call to get emergency help on the way, roadside assistance, vehicle diagnostics, and scheduling service appointments. Users can also send directions to their car from Google Maps, get alerts on their smart phone if preset speed limits or geographic boundaries are violated, and get directions back to their parked car if they get lost.
The e-Services app is a free download. Availability dates, phone compatibility, and other details have not yet been released.
UVO 2 sports a litany of new features informing and entertaining drivers. You first notice the brilliant and highly responsive 4.3-inch full color TFT touch screen located in the dash’s center. Pertinent media buttons are to the left of the display, while eServices, Phone, and Setup buttons to the right.
It’s the eServices button that is of great interest, however, as it offers drivers 14 convenient services. Among them: Crash Notification Assist, Roadside Assist, Automatic Diagnostics, Manual Diagnostics, Maintenance, Owner’s Guide, Driving Info, Send2Car (for point of interest navigation), Curfew Limit, Speed Alert, Geo Fensing, Car Care Web, and Park Assist.
While we only got to play with a few of the prototype’s functions, the future of UVO looks bright, not to mention easily usable and efficient.
A video demonstration of the technology in action:
Kia has come a long way since unveiling its UVO technology nearly two years ago. Critics seem to agree that the updates have significantly improved its ease of use and capabilities.
Courtesy of Autobytel.com, this video reviews the 2012 Kia Forte SX 5-Door.
As the reviewer mentions, this model is aesthetically appealing with its sporty, European styling. The Kia Forte would be an ideal vehicle for those looking for a fun drive that doesn’t guzzle up the gas, is affordable, safe and is backed with a ten year warranty. The Boston Globe recently came out with a list of the Top Drives for 2012. The roster included a wide variety of ten cars, trucks, wagons and SUVs (and one “Dreamer’s Bonus”) spanning from the Range Rover Evoque to the BMW X3 and the Acura TSX Sport Wagon. Among the honorees included the 2012 Kia Optima. Here’s what The Boston Globe’s reviewers said about the newly re-designed mid-size sedan:
Kia Optima
Price: $21,750
200-hp I-4/206-hp hybrid/274-hp turbo I-4, 6-speed auto, FWD, EPA 24/35 (standard trim)
During the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in February, Los Angeles Clippers star rookie Blake Griffin jumped over the Kia Optima to complete a dunk. For the rest of the year, it was the Optima doing the jumping over its competition. Sales increased three-fold through the first 11 months of 2011 compared to the same period in 2010.
The Optima has achieved a metamorphosis from “unremarkable” to a first-class, five-passenger, mid-sized sedan. In this total redesign Kia has given the Optima, like all its vehicles, a sportier image than its Korean cousin and corporate sibling Hyundai. Even though the Optima shares a platform and engines with the critically acclaimed Hyundai Sonata, the exterior design, suspension tuning, and interior treatment are significantly different. The interior is surprisingly spacious. In addition, our test car got a gold star for having a heated steering wheel as an unexpected accoutrement.
We thought the midlevel Optima was just fine though we liked the turbo version as well. It’s also available as a hybrid.
The list of the best cars of 2012 (accompanied with their price) according to the Boston Globe is (in no particular order):

Lets talk about the Kia Picanto, or as its known in South Korea and Chile the Kia Morning. The Picanto is a car that is not currently in the United States and as far as I know has no plans on doing so either. So do not read this post and run to the first Indiana Kia dealership you see and ask about the Kia Picanto. The Picanto is a tiny little car that is mean for city driving. Cars like that just do not have a niche in the United States. Here is what the interior of the Kia Picanto is all about. Willie Morris, a manager at a Kentucky Kia dealership thinks that their would be some interest in Louisville for the Picanto, but not enough demand for sales to be sustainable
The Kia Picanto, known as the Kia Morning in South Korea and Chile, Kia EuroStar in Taiwan, Kia New Morning in Vietnam[1] and the Naza Suria or Naza Picanto in Malaysia[2], is a low cost city car produced by Kia Motors.
The all-new Picanto’s design features existing compact car concepts with new emotional values and consumer-friendly values.
The interior concept is fresh and unexpected, and unique styling and differentiated elements provide a new, fun design in a compact car.
Major design aspects
Value-Focused
We focused on expanding the space with soft and minimal aspects and creating a refined and modern image. The all-new Picanto provides a user-oriented, intuitive and easy-to-use interface with “Cognitive Design.”
The cluster applies the entire center cylinder and digital graphics for a display and matches the digital age with increased speed and cognitive capabilities.
In addition, a large LCD screen is added to the cluster. In the process of designing, we focused on creating unique and advanced visuals by applying a large display to a compact car’s cluster.
We added sporty elements in the fresh design by adding subtle lighting (optional feature) as graphic color “garnishes” to the air vents and the bottom of the audio. We also tried to make driving at night more comfortable by adding lighting to the driver’s tray to match the exterior design.
Driver-friendly Features
We designed the center fascia, taking into consideration ergonomic aspects like visibility, functionality and more. The all-new Picanto has a control switch that is positioned relatively higher for easier navigation. Unlike other compact cars, the Picanto has heater controls that are closer to the driver. The controls also have an asymmetrical structure, which are more aesthetically pleasing.
As most of the Picanto owners are expected to be young women, there are new female-friendly features, including a vanity mirror, accented colors, a delicate sheet pattern and plenty of storage space designed for privacy and convenience.
Among various ideas, the large vanity mirror on the sun visor is the one that stands out as it allows drivers to look at themselves and fix their makeup without having to turn their heads. It’s not easy to apply make up in the dark. Although the previous Picanto had lighting, it shaded the driver’s face because the light was positioned from the head lining. To fix this, the lighting in the all-new Picanto was repositioned to directly light the face without shining directly into the eyes. Additionally, the lively lamp lighting brings an emotional feeling, similar to that of stars’ dressing rooms.
In the console, there is an open cup holder and small tray.
To maximize the capabilities of storage space, the all-new Picanto has a multi-console which contains a rotating cup holder and space to fit a small umbrella.
Unlike the present model, the initial draft of the cup holder featured a flat design. It was detachable so that a wide tray could be used separately without the cup holder board. However, users began using the tray as a cup holder, making it difficult to hold a can of soda without the can tipping over.
There needed to be an idea that allowed for high functionality in the console space.
We carried out studies with a structure planning manager about functionality and created the initial multi-space concept, resulting in the rotating multi-cup holder that is now in the all-new Picanto.
Furthermore, we proposed a modern and simple door trim.
We were innovative by placing a speaker in a bold new spot on the door trim on the top part of the crush pad in order to change the existing package layout.
The door trim design with wide multipurpose pockets in the dynamically shaped center trim also provides emotional design values.
Interior manager, Kwae-jae Cho researcher
The all-new Picanto is a product with a “mix-culture” design, as it combines European emotional design values with Korean high-tech digital aspects.
I fully enjoyed the process of applying Kia’s unique design values to the all-new Picanto.
The all-new Picanto’s changes started with consumer feedback and the many ideas of enthusiastic designers. It was improved with step-by-step functionality evaluations. It then finally evolved to maximize usage and practicality.
I am proud to say that the final Picanto product and its emotional qualities were achieved through the countless discussions and revisions by engineers.
I am confident in telling you that not only does the all-new Picanto satisfy drivers with its economical features, but also with its emotional appeal. Many drivers will feel that the Picanto is a reflection of their personalities and individuality. Its design includes not only practicality, but style and charm.
I would like to thank all the designers and other managers who worked so hard up to the very last minute before mass production for the utmost quality and design.
Please enjoy this cheerful British man talk about the Kia Picanto
I have recently purchased a new car in Louisville, Kentucky. I did a fair amount of research before buying the car, and would like to share a bit about my car buying experience. I visited many websites sites, and read many reviews on a lot of local car dealerships. Most dealerships had mixed reviews, but a couple dealers really stood out. I was very careful this time around because I had a bad experience the last time I bought a used car in Louisville. It took my about as long to buy a car as it did not pick out a stick of deordorant from the grocery story. I stook a look at a couple and then just went with one. Not the best idea when you are spending $10,000.
The last time I bought a car I was not careful at all, I did not do any background research on vehicles or even consider the reputation of the car dealership I was about to purchase from. I bought a used Honda Accord last year from the a Louisville Honda Dealer, and they gave me a raw deal. It was partially my fault because I never asked for a car fax, or did much background research on the vehicle. It had been wrecked and I was never made aware of it by my salesmen ( who probably did not know in all likelihood) or anyone else at the dealership. Â
Once I bought Honda, I knew I was stuck with it and I decided that I would stick it out and drive it for a year. Once that year was up I would go to the Louisville used cars dealer and upgrade to a something else.
I went to the Kia Store, and took and saw the Kia Soul for the first time. Â I took it for a test drive and fell in love with it. Â I was worried that the finances would not work out right, due to credit reasons, but they found a lender that was suitable for me. Â The payments were right where I wanted them, and my interest rate down 10% from my last loan. Â
My salesmen was Jerome Harris, when I came in told him what I could do, and he listened to my needs and came through for me. There was no pressure once so ever, overall it was a very good experience. Â Now I can drive around town listening to my XM radio, which stays on the Elvis channel!
When it comes to advice on buying a new or used car, Edmunds.com is always a reliable source. They are not bias and are not afraid to call things as they see them. Disruptions stemming from the March 11 earthquake in Japan are threatening to throw car dealer inventories into short supply, making this summer’s auto market susceptible to high prices and low incentives. To avoid this unfriendly consumer environment, Edmunds urges car buyers to follow any one of these five tips:
Wait until the fall or winter to make your new car purchase. If you don’t need a new car right now, the smartest play is to wait until later in the year when production is back to normal and carmakers have more flexibility with incentives.
Extend your car lease past this summer. If your lease is scheduled to expire this summer, work with your lessor to extend the current lease.
Finish up someone else’s lease. Companies like LeaseTrader.com specialize in matching consumers who want out of their leases with consumers who are interested picking up a short-term lease.
Shop around and negotiate. Patient consumers who look hard enough will be able to find the right deal on a new car this summer, even if the vehicle isn’t their first or second choice. But identifying a good deal is only the first step. Edmunds shows you how to be in a better position to save even more money at the bargaining table in “Negotiating 101″.
Don’t assume used cars will be the better deal. Edmunds research indicates that buying a used car won’t provide salvation from inflated prices. Today’s used car prices are significantly higher than in the past; a record number of models have earned a place on Edmunds list of one-year old used cars that are essentially as expensive as new cars at http://www.edmunds.com/car-news/new-vs-used-car-buying.html.
For consumers who have no other option than to buy or lease a car this summer, Edmunds is there to help. Every week Edmunds updates this page with the most attractive new and used car deals on the market within each segment. So whether you’re looking for a compact car, sports car, or an SUV, we’ll help you identify the best incentive offers to save you the most money. Read more
